Structural assessment

Location: Hatfield

We were asked to conduct an assessment on this mezzanine structure in Hatfield, to determine whether or not it would be able to sustain a change in purpose.

  • Surveyed the structure
  • Interviewed the client about the change of use
  • Conducted calculations and submitted findings to the client in a report

Home extension

Location: Watford

Our clients wanted to extend their home but as it involved the removal of load-bearing walls and roof structure, they engaged us to design the structure as well as some of the construction sequencing to ensure safety during the works.

  • Worked with the architect and building contractor
  • Prepared a set of drawings and calculations
  • Conducted site visits during construction

Derelict barn survey

Location: Brocket Hall

We were asked to conduct a survey of this dilapidated barn in the grounds of this 18th century estate, (now used as a golf, corporate function & chic dining venue). The owners wanted advice on the safe removal of the building as it was posing a threat to health and safety.

  • We visited the barn and took measurements
  • Wrote up a report detailing to safe, process-based method of dismantling the structure
  • The client was able to instruct their contractor to remove the building safely

Client Testimonials

We were looking at an end of terrace mid-war property but the building society-appointed surveyor classed it as unmortgageable due to subsidence as evidenced by cracks visible in the internal staircase. The engineer examined and reported that there was no subsidence but that the flank wall was beginning to bow out and recommended the insertion of two steel rods welded to lengths of perforated metal strips which were in turn fixed to the first floor joists. Cast iron “spreader plates” were positioned over the steel rods where they protruded through the flank wall and bolted in place. Total cost of materials approximately £250! Without Abbott Holliday’s advice we undoubtedly would not have bought the property, with which we are now very pleased. Brian F
