Cracks in a listed building
Location: Reading
This property was a refurbished Grade II listed building dating from 1810. The inspection was for a pre-purchase survey regarding a bowing wall and possible structural movement.
- Site visit conducted
- Walls found to be slightly out of plumb but no evidence of bowing
- Minor cracks at the main truss seatings were due to a combination of very slight movement and plaster shrinkage.
- Findings sent to customer, whose concerns were lifted
Leaning chimney
Location: Reading
The semi-detached house was built in the 1930s. The valuation report prepared for the purchasers noted a lean on the chimneys and required the advice of a qualified Structural Engineer be obtained.
- Site visit conducted
- It was noted that this effect is typical for houses of this age
- Remedial action was recommended in line with BRE Repair Guidance No.15
- The customer was able to pass our recommendations on to their building contractor
Supporting knocking through a wall
Location: Didcot
The customer asked us to assess the loadings on a partition wall to allow its removal and replacement by a steel beam to create an open space in their home.
- Site visit conducted
- Measurements for loading assessment
- Replacement beam specified
- Findings and advice documented in report
- The customer was able to issue the report to their contractor so building work could commence and the load could be properly supported
Client Testimonials
I contacted Abbott Holliday regarding a subsidence claim I had made on my home insurance. I asked for an independent structural engineer’s inspection of my house and a report, as I was unhappy with the way the insurance company were dealing with it. I know nothing of these matters and felt out of my depth. A senior Structural Engineer did a careful inspection and provided a helpful report, which did not fully concur with that from the loss adjusters. Since then, Peter has been very helpful in advising me how to proceed, as a result of which the insurance company have changed their approach. I’m so glad I contacted Abbott Holliday and have been very grateful for their help and support. I would thoroughly recommend them. Diana R
